What is A COI Certificate and when do i need one?

A COI or Certificate of Inspection is an annual requirement primarily used to verify that a vehicle meets the minimum safety standards. This Certification is required when re-registering or transferring registration for heavy vehicles. Owners of vehicles registered under the COI scheme are required to maintain a current COI at all times. Determining the COI requirements for your vehicle involves knowing its intended use, Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM), or Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM)
COIs apply to the following types of registered vehicles:

  • Heavy Vehicles over 4.5t GVM up to and including 16t GVM.
  • Trucks, Tow Trucks, Motorhomes, over 4.5t GVM up to and including 16t GVM. 
  • Taxis, Booked Hire Vehicles, Limousines and Special Purpose Limousines up to 4.5t GVM.
  • Trailers over 3.5t ATM up to and including 10t ATM.
  • Caravans over 3.5t ATM up to and including 10t ATM.
